Here’s a million dollar question for you: what would you do if you didn’t do what you do now? It sounds simple, but when you think about it, it’s actually a very complex question, which raises all kinds of supplementary questions about life and where you are heading.
The best laid plans can go awry, but if you don’t have any plans at all, you could meander along, letting chance and other people dictate what happens to you. Rather than choosing a job you love, you could end up bored and clock-watching every day.
If you have a burning ambition, why haven’t you achieved it yet? I’m not talking about scoring a goal for your team in a cup final when you’re already the wrong side of 30 and you’d rather be watching the match from your sofa. I’m talking about goals that are realisable – we all have them, but we tend to put them on the back burner while real life takes over.
The most important thing to remember is that doing nothing is a choice. If you are unhappy with something in your life but you’re not doing anything about it, then this is a decision as much as doing something would be. Think of it this way and change may not seem as daunting.
It’s true that it’s difficult to go off and travel the world if you’ve got three kids under five. But if you’ve been thinking about changing careers, go and see a careers advisor or look into retraining. It could be easier than you think. If you have a toxic friend, decide if you really need this person in your life. If your relationship isn’t working or you would like something to happen with someone but haven’t dared make a move then grasp the nettle. You might get stung but surely that’s better than living with regret for the rest of your life.
