The Eye magazine (Huddersfield) March 2013 – The Huddersfield Literature Festival is here

Bestselling writers, stand-up comedy, poetry events – after months of intensive planning, the Huddersfield Literature Festival is finally upon us.

The acts have been booked, the venues have been sorted, the brochure written and the tickets printed. All we need now is you, the audience.

Whether you’re coming to meet your favourite author – Joanne Harris, Kate Atkinson, Jodi Picoult, Jeremy Dyson – discuss poetry or enjoy comedy, we hope you’ll find something of interest. There’s plenty for the younger generation, from storytelling and a Making Monsters workshop to creative writing workshops for teens. Some events are free and we’ve tried to keep most other events at £4 or less, with concessions available.

The Huddersfield Manga Con 2013 (12 noon-4pm, Saturday 16 March), will be a great family day out, with stalls, art competitions and talks celebrating Japanese art and storytelling. You can even learn how to write your name in Japanese.

The goodwill for this year’s festival has been overwhelming and my hope is that over time we’ll be able to grow the festival into a major event on the calendar, attracting people from far and wide to showcase what Huddersfield has to offer.

There has been great support from the student team from the University of Huddersfield – led by Coral Wood, a creative writing student who came to Huddersfield primarily because she wanted to be involved with the literature festival. Enthusiastic, hard-working, organised – and passionate about books, she and the rest of the team have made an invaluable contribution.

Tickets are available from the Central Library, or check for online booking information. See you there!
