The Copywriting Process
The copywriting process is straightforward but it can be helpful to get an idea in advance of what to expect when you hire a copywriter:
Step 1: Initial contact by email, phone or in person
Step 2: Meeting to discuss copywriting requirements in more detail OR phone/email discussion (this will not be charged for).
Step 3: Written creative brief from client. As far as possible, it’s helpful to have as much information as possible about the company and products/services, plus details of tone and style required, a rough word count and a deadline to work towards.
A note on verbal briefings: Many of my clients prefer to give a verbal briefing on the phone or during the course of a meeting. Although I’m happy to accommodate this preference, please note that with a verbal briefing, the client must accept responsibility for any ambiguities in the resulting copy, including any further costs incurred for rewrites.
Step 4: I email a quote for the agreed work.
Step 5: The client emails me confirmation that they accept the quote and also the Terms & Conditions set out on the Key Words website.
Step 6: Work is completed and emailed to the client as a Word document.
Step 7: The client will at this time be emailed their invoice. Please note that this is payable within 14 days, irrespective of ‘end of month’ or other payment practices in your company’s handling of accounts payable.
Step 8: The client may come back to me with feedback and for a second draft of the work, should they require it. This will not incur any further fee unless the changes required differ from the agreed creative brief.
I hope this outline is helpful. If there is anything else you need to know, please feel free to contact me for further discussion.
