Copywriting mistakes – homonyms

One of the most common mistakes that people make when copywriting is confusing words that sound the same when spoken out loud but have a different meaning and, in many cases, are spelled differently. These are known as homonyms.

Strangely enough, one example is the confusion between copywriting and copyrighting. As a writer of copy or copywriter, I still occasionally get requests from people wanting to copyright material – register their work to prevent others using it without permission.

Why you should proof your work when copywriting

If you’re writing copy for your website, blog or email marketing – or for printed marketing material such as flyers, brochures, newsletters or press releases – it’s important to proof your work thoroughly to avoid mistakes creeping in.

Presenting copy with grammar and spelling mistakes not only makes you look unprofessional, but also distracts the reader from the message you are trying to get across.

Cheap copywriting options

If hiring a copywriter to produce the copy is beyond your budget, at least ask a copywriter to proof read your web content or marketing material before your customers see it. A professional copywriter should be able to spot any errors, saving you the embarrassment of customers noticing the mistakes – or the cost of having to reprint a brochure or flyer.

10 examples of homonyms

Here are 10 examples of homonyms – some may see obvious when you see them on the page, but if you are rushing your work, they may just creep into your copy.

Allowed, aloud

By, buy, bye

Council, counsel

Drawer, draw

Hear, here

Principle, principal

Roll, role

Sore, soar

Their, there, they’re

Waste, waist

As always – if in doubt, look it up!
